Sea Glass and Stone - Drawings and Jewellery by Buzz Mitchell

About

Drawings and jewellery from England's Suffolk coast.

I grew up in East Africa and Hampshire and studied at Norwich School of Art and Anglia Ruskin in Cambridge. I've lived in Oxford and travelled widely but feel most at home near the Suffolk coast, where I have lived for the last 20 years.

I've had a varied career as a designer and art director, inhouse for publishers and later working freelance from home around my two daughters. I now draw, mostly plants and landscapes, and make simple sustainable jewellery from the lovely things I gather at low tide along the Suffolk coast where I live.

I'm lucky enough to have this short film about my work, made by talented Claire Whittenbury as part of her Human Elements project

Jewellery I use sea glass, stones, and fragments of shell and ceramic - naturally tumbled by the sea. I don't polish my finds - they're entirely crafted by the waves over decades, possibly centuries. I keep the best pieces to carefully drill and combine with sterling silver or gold on a variety of cords.

You'll find the name of the beach or region where each piece was found added to the descriptions. I love the hidden history - and like to think I'm recycling the lost city of Dunwich, the old pier at Southwold, or just giving new life to a discarded bottle.

I also have finds from other parts of the UK, and from around the world - all found by myself, family and kind friends.

If something you like has sold please ask as I may be able to create something similar.

Drawings  I've been using mainly graphite to capture the landscapes and windswept plants - while walking the beaches and estuaries in winter, and exploring wildflower meadows inland in summer. There is something comforting and meditative about this mark-making process, alongside my beach combing. Observing nature so closely, while trying to achieve a sense of place, helps restore a deeper connection to my environment. Please email me for information on available drawings.

Commissions I’m sometimes open to drawing or jewellery commissions - for example drawing plants or views for specific spaces in your home - or creating jewellery using your own finds from favourite walks or beaches. Examples of both can be found on my Products page and my Instagram or Facebook. Please email me if you have an idea youd like to discuss.

Gift boxes Your jewellery will arrive in a recycled card gift box tied with raffia. There is brief information about my work on the inside lid, along with this website address. I usually add a tiny label with the name of the beach or region where the piece was found.

Gift Vouchers are also available from £40. Each voucher will have a unique code to be redeemed within a year, and can be used for a purchase or a commission.

Shops and Galleries If you're interested in stocking my work in your shop or gallery please email me via my contact page.
